Winnipeg Jets overview - Part One - Coaching Staff

It stands to reason that the Winnipeg Jets will become a Canadian icon,Jets logo hearkening back memories of the intense struggles of those in the now defunct Smythe Division. Perhaps the process to become comfortable with the franchise will take as long as it did for individuals in the Great White North to hum the new Hockey Night in Canada theme music for the first time.

Chiller Instinct will begin to delve into the structure that General Manager Kevin Cheveldayov inherits from the Atlanta Thrashers' ownership group as the team prepares to fill their new digs at the MTS Centre.

Cheveldayoff and his charges are responsible to make sure that this seventh member of Canada's National Hockey League fraternity does not repeat the playoff demise of the original club. Winnipeg will call upon the following coaching staff to set right the Thrasher collapse from the previous season (I will fill out the listing soon):

Kevin Cheveldayov (General Manager and Executive Vice President) - a proven winner and no stranger to hard work, 'Chevy' has an impressive resume and some real nice pieces to work with in subsequent years. During his career, the Blaine Lake, Saskatchewan raised Cheveldayoff must have known an opportunity like this would present itself eventually.

The former Brandon Wheat King (WHL) and New York Islanders' draft pick rests on no laurels it seems and has won multiple championships (including the Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2009) at different levels. He is familiar with many of the players on the club because of his tenure working with the American Hockey League Chicago Wolves, then the affiliate of the Atlanta Thrashers. Official Bio HERE, background article on 'Chevy' HERE.

Craig Heisinger - (Senior Vice President & Director, Hockey Operations/Assistant General Manager) - 'Zinger's prints are all over the franchise and province, literally. Brought up in Winnipeg, Heisinger has worn all kinds of hats for the original Jets club, Canadian Olympic Team, AHL teams, and junior teams - the Winnipeg Warriors and Brandon Wheat Kings.

As the Jets come under the jurisdiction of David Thomson's financial empire and this allows a certain amount clout. It remains to be seen how the dynamic between Thomson and Chairman / minority owner Mark Chipman. Chipman was a driving force in bringing NHL calibre hockey back to Manitoba. Fans would no doubt like to see that mixture of desire and steady hand develop a roster that can contend year in and out.
