Back O’Ree assigned to Order of Canada
Willie O’Ree delighted fans well into his 40’s in a number of leagues in North America. O’Ree was recognized as the original black man to skate in the National Hockey League with the Boston Bruins in the Montreal Forum on January 19th, 1958. Joining forty-one others Tuesday, December 30, 2008, O’Ree was anointed with the Order of Canada as a Member.
It may be his work after his playing days that stand out most. O’Ree’s appointment as the NHL’s Director of Youth Development for its Diversity Task Force is all the more impressive when one digs into the programs. An annual ‘Willie O’Ree All-Star Game’ brings together youngsters, NHL players, and the merits of the host city. Previous work with the International Hockey League and the San Diego Charger’s security detail has brought further merit after his playing days.
O’Ree was selected as the Lester Patrick Trophy winner in 2003 and was given the Order of New Brunswick in 2005. His recognition by the present fold of the National Hockey League is delightful and the recent appointments of state are duly warranted.
